There is definitely merit in new project management

Project and portfolio management has evolved to the extent that immediate and accurate management via mobile devices, integrated with the Cloud, is possible. Executive management from leading project management expert services providers, including McManus Consulting, Microsoft and Dac Systems believe South African businesses now have an opportunity to strengthen their project management capability and better leverage off this discipline to improve operations.

To illustrate their point and unveil available game-changing technology, leadership from Dac Systems, McManus Consulting and Microsoft hosted a number of customers, partners and business leaders at an information session in Bryanston on 11 March.

Aldo van Tonder, Solutions Executive at Dac Systems, underlined the significance of Microsoft Office365, Nintex and Project online and the contribution these technologies continue to make to build project management efficiency in business.

He also reflected on several offerings that are designed to empower businesses with the ability to make the most out of data, of out-of-the-box capabilities and optimised processes to improve management of projects and ultimately enhance operations.

The Cloud has changed the dynamics in terms of how companies drive projects and manage the discipline.

Dac Systems, together with its partners, believe the market has opened up significantly in terms of its understanding of the relevance of the cloud and how mobile integration can strengthen project management.

“The reality of the market today is that businesses can manage projects, initiate and control critical processes using mobile platforms, and they know the entire project cycle can be looked after and controlled, whether on-premise or remotely,” van Tonder explains.

He is confident that the introduction of Project Online, McMethod.net and PowERP solutions will help to usher in a new project management methodology and application strategy for businesses to follow.

“The challenges to business remain and are acutely felt in times of economic pressure or slow-down. These challenges include addressing the requirement for flexibility, accessibility and mobility in the workplace, the ability to align investment with business priorities to better compete and achieving maximum leverage of comprehensive vision and control of what people are doing in the organisation. Fortunately, the area of project management is one characterised by extensive innovation and this will help businesses to successfully address these challenges,” says van Tonder.

New Project is the umbrella term used by Dac Systems and its partners to describe the impact these technologies and trends are having on business operations, irrespective of their size, focus or level of PPM expertise.

Given the increase in interest in solutions and services that are cost effective and promise ROI, the case for solutions that offer capabilities to enhance project management is justified.

Tony McManus, Managing Director of McManus Consulting, a long standing partner of Dac Systems, demonstrated the power of McMethod.net methodology and its service in facilitating cloud and mobile based application in the market today.

“We are very proud of McMethod.net and the input of our partners in ensuring the transfer of value to clients. Project management has evolved and we believe that platforms like McMethod.net reflect this level of innovation and progress,” says McManus.

Leading Insurance Provider improves operations using McMethod.net

A South Africa-based medical aid, insurance and investment giant has optimised its project and portfolio operation using the McMethod.net project management system provided by McManus Consulting, in association with their development partner Dac Systems.

The client required the services of an experienced service provider to introduce a solution that would help to facilitate the implementation of its comprehensive project management strategy, one that covers both domestic and international practices.

As a leader in medical aid cover, insurance and investment, the Company had a requirement to manage various projects according to best practices and to provide a functional Project Management Information System to its various divisions across the globe.

There was also a need to accommodate the various ways these different divisions approach projects, whilst enabling the overall organisation to monitor project, programme and portfolio performance at a group level.

“It was a sizeable undertaking and required a solution that would offer the necessary level of automation on projects and the required workflow capability,” says Tony McManus, MD of project management specialist McManus Consulting (Pty) Ltd. “We knew that McMethod.net would be the ideal solution.”

McMethod.net is a project management system containing comprehensive Project Management Methodologies with all the necessary Project Management templates, governance instruments, project sites and project processes.

These project processes are automated using Nintex® workflow for Project Server and an automated process can be defined for each project type undertaken, from complex to simple – including the ability to apply no workflow if required.

These methodologies can be easily modified to accommodate any specific need or completely new methodologies can be defined using the tool.

The solution utilises software elements already owned by the Client, such as Microsoft SharePoint® and Microsoft Project Server® which ensured that the Company could leverage off their existing investment in Microsoft products.

In addition to this, the underlying technology used for McMethod.net (Nintex® Workflow for Project Server) has enabled this leading insurance provider to automate business processes outside of the project environment such as IT provisioning, HR processes as well as procurement processes – all managed through the power of SharePoint®.

“McMethod.net is an example of the impact that the right technology can have in providing project information across conventional and mobile platforms. Access to this kind of solution will assist businesses in gaining competitive advantage through improved project insight and greater team participation, leading to increased project success,” McManus adds.

Following this successful pilot on McMethod.net, the solution will now be rolled out globally.

Executive management at the Client have praised the level of expertise housed within McManus Consulting and Dac Systems and believe the McMethod.net solution has already made a lasting difference to its project and portfolio management capability. There is every confidence global rollout will progress smoothly and will result in significant improvement for the client.

Partnership strength will determine project success in 2014

The degree to which Project Management Information Systems will empower businesses to better cope with game changers like collaboration, mobility and the Internet of Everything will depend on the ability of those systems to accommodate these technologies.

The changing of the technology landscape is driving the demand for the right technology and its effective use.  This can be secured by having the right partners on board explains Tony McManus, MD of project management specialist McManus Consulting (Pty) Ltd.

McManus Consulting has collaborated with Dac Systems to establish McMethod.net, an end-to-end project process management tool. It has been designed to help organisations apply clear, repeatable project processes and take advantage of the move to personal devices, collaboration and increased cloud-based interaction with enterprise systems.

McMethod.net is an example of the impact that the right alliance can have in closing the gap between personal and corporate interactions by using technology to provide project information across conventional and mobile platforms.

Access to this kind of solution will assist businesses in gaining competitive advantage through improved project success.

McManus Consulting provides the project management best practice knowledge to the collaboration.

Why adopting McMethod.net is best for business control

To achieve maximum control over key business processes, including innovation management and methodology management, it is critical to have the right solution in place and the right experienced partner positioned to offer support and guidance.

This is the view of experts behind McMethod.net, a project, portfolio and workflow management solution developed by project management consultancy McManus Consulting in collaboration with technology expert firm, Dac Systems.

The company, in association with its partners, recently hosted an exclusive business technology showcase session to highlight the advantages of McMethod.net, its use of Microsoft and Nintex technologies, and what it means to businesses.

Explains Tony McManus, MD, McManus Consulting (Pty) Ltd, “This solution is designed to help decision makers transform their operations by correctly identifying and executing projects which deliver business benefit. This solution also allows clients to leverage off their existing investments in Microsoft products such as SharePoint and Project Server”.

Among the key benefits of McMethod.net are that the enterprise can define their desired processes, executives can correctly prioritise projects, project managers have a clear understanding of what process each project type requires, and the application of best practices will typically result in an improvement of project success rates.

Most notably, the solution comes with datasheets, dashboards and a pre-built methodology aligned with one of the leading international project management methods. The solution can be deployed on a client site during the course of a single week.

Once installed, the solution can be tailored to suit the requirements of any client and any number of reports, methodologies or processes can be accommodated. .

McManus emphasises the tight integration with existing systems and the ability to unleash the power of existing Microsoft investments as other important benefits.

“We continue to engage with companies that are serious about their projects, standardised processes, improved workflow and appropriate governance to enhance their ability to compete. We have been very pleased with the response to our hosted technology showcase, which feature live demonstrations and there is certainly an increasing requirement in the market for what this solution can do,” says McManus.

McMethod.net positioned where methodology and technology meet

There are solutions that can be strategically integrated and easily applied – in line with cost-cutting principles required in business today – that help decision makers decipher the conundrum posed by advanced project, portfolio and workflow management requirements.

This is one of the key takeaways from an executive roundtable hosted recently by the creators of McMethod.net, a leading technology, based on Microsoft and Nintex products, and developed by Project Management specialist McManus Consulting in collaboration with Dac Systems

With the offer of an opportunity to experience the flexibility and quality of this solution at the Microsoft Technology Centre, the roundtable drew substantial interest from decision makers in business, eager to learn how this technology can make a difference to their companies.

In a bid to delve more deeply into the dynamics of how technology and methodology should be applied to benefit businesses, the organisers posed the question “What came first, the technology or methodology?”

In answering the question some attendees suggested that technology had to have come first because, generally, people tend to act before they think. This was further supported by the observation that methodologies tend to become more important as an organisation grows and the need for standardised approaches arises.

The roundtable discussion offered an opportunity to review technology modules and their relevance in the broader technological scene. The point was made that application of methodology has huge implications for technology, as reflected in Microsoft’s growing solution portfolio.

The corporate market continues to be defined and redefined by the pursuit of solutions that automate processes and procedures. However, these solutions are differentiated by the value they provide various industries.

For example, from a banking and finance point of view, the requirement is for service providers to supply flexible, robust and effective technology that suits the specific environment, whereas in the mining industry, well established, engineering-based practices guide the way.

Organisers and attendees concurred that technology – along with methodology – can and should be tailored to suit the needs of each business, and that no single approach suits every business.

The discussion also covered what tools a project manager needs to help ensure project success. These include clear project processes, documentation management including standardised templates, a project scheduling tool and above all, a collaborative and communicative environment.

The group was then introduced to McMethod.net and the potential benefits it offered businesses.

The primary benefit of McMethod.net is that it is built on the leading Microsoft solution stack including SharePoint® for collaboration and document management, MS Project Server® for integrated planning, MS Project for ease of adoption and Nintex® for comprehensive workflow definition.

These technology benefits translate into business benefits which include the ability to use the processes, standardised templates, workflow and governance management built into McMethod.net or to define processes specific to their business.

Other benefits include providing project participants with a clear understanding of what they need to do within each project type as well as an improvement in project success rates through the application of best practices

“How would you change your business now?” asked Tony McManus, MD, McManus Consulting (Pty) Ltd. The answer to that is “Projects!”

“Projects are all about change. If you don’t manage the effect of the change on your people, you will rarely succeed. Keys to project success include careful planning, effective communication, stakeholder participation and the tools to achieve these” he said.

“The reality is that environments and customers are different and therefore we, together with our project solutions, have to be flexible,” commented Aldo van Tonder, Solutions Executive, Dac Systems.

McMethod.net takes the globe by storm, one method at a time
